39th Annual Association for Gerontology in Higher Education Meeting
Ms. Woods-Scott was a featured presenter in partnership with Bethune-Cookman University for the Colleges & Communities workshop session entitled, "Strategies to Successfully Surf the Age Wave to Your Ideal Career in Aging & Teaching Creativity in Aging Careers within Communities of Color."
Presntation Synopsis: This workshop’s literature will focuses on promoting interest and opportunities for career growth in the aging services within the Communities of Color sector to students, young professionals, and career changers. Much attention has been given to the rise of the Baby Boom Generation whom in 2011, were 79 million baby boomers in the country, with approximately 10,000 of them turning 65 every day for the next 19 years. As the “graying” of America continues to grow, there is a growing demand for professional minorities working in Gerontology. The importance of developing these new leaders for organizations serving older adults within our “Communities of Color”is ever critical. Strategies to Successfully Surf the Age Wave Career Mapping Workbook empowers emerging professionals in aging with step-by step instructions on how to design a fulfilling, sustainable, and creatively challenging career in the “silver” industries. African Americans in Gerontology a nonprofit organization mission is to provide guidance and professional development opportunities, encourage networking, and promote community activism for African American professionals and students in the field of gerontology, in order to improve the quality of the life for African American elderly. Lastly, the participants will be enlightened with suggested creative opportunities for entrepreneurship in the field of aging studies specifically related to Communities of Color. The presenters for this workshop have a wealth of knowledge and experience working within the Communities of Color. Mrs. Urrikka Woods-Scott, Founder of UBW Senior Solutions, LLC is dedicated to educating students interested in pursuing careers in gerontology. She has a unique approach to guiding the student to their full potential. Ms. Aisha Young, the founder of African Americans in Gerontology has provided educational materials to educators, practitioners, counselors and students in regards to servicing the Communities of Color. Mrs. Lillie G. Wiggins, founder of Touch By Heavenly Angels Senior Companion Services, is dedicated to encouraging minorities in pursuing an entrepreneur path in gerontology. This workshop will be interactive allowing participation from participants. |
